DOING OUR PART TO BE SUSTAINABLE
we are a fully solar brewery
Mahalo Aleworks features an electric brewhouse that is powered by 2 solar PV systems totaling 28kw. When the sun is shining bright we can run all 3 of our 9KW boil kettle elements at 100%, and when its cloudy, the beer just takes a little longer! Every appliance in our taproom is also the most energy-efficient available.
We reclaim our knockout water
This saves water and energy. Chilled water is pumped through a heat exchanger to cool wort on its way to the fermentation vessels. That same water then exits the other side of the heat exchanger as super-heated water that we collect and use to brew the next batch of beer.
we use high-tech barrels
The barrels used at Mahalo Aleworks are made of stainless steel with replaceable wood staves. Not only does this allow us to use a range of wood not commonly available in barrel form, it also helps offset carbon from shipping. Instead of shipping heavy, large, empty barrels from the mainland or Europe all the time, we simply ship a small box of staves and replace them in the stainless “skeleton”.
Our spent grains go to local farmers
After brewing a batch of beer, the spent grains used in the brewing process are picked up by local farmers who use them to feed livestock and create amazing compost. This compost is then used to grow thriving plants that produce the actual fruit we use in our fruited beers. This is an excellent way to keep the food cycle local and sustainable.
